"You sure know your aircraft. This is one of the most advanced stealth fighters ever - literally the best of the best."
Harry's description of this plane in the shop.

The Lockheed Martin F/A-22 Raptor (Called the F-22 Raptor in the first two Airforce Delta games) is a recurring aircraft in the Airforce Delta series, it appears in all three Airforce Delta games.

Origin (Real-Life)[]

The Lockheed Martin F/A-22 Raptor is one of the most advanced fighters ever created in modern times. Created as part of the Advanced Tactical Fighter program (under the unofficial codename YF-22 Lightning II), it eventually won the program and became one of the most infamous fighters designed.

Design (All games)[]

The design of the craft is, of course, very iconic; Wide wings, angled vertical stabilizers, and thrust-vectoring nozzles.

In the first game, the F-22 still had a pitot tube attached on the nose of the aircraft, as it was based on the YF-22 concept model. (The production model Raptor removed this tube) The later games, which had the production version, removed this design detail.

Performance[]

Airforce Delta[]

The best aircraft in the game, hands down. All of its stats are amazing, with its worst being Defense (which is merely "medium-high"). And that's small potatoes considering its speed and power are maximum, and its mobility is the highest in the game, just barely beating out the Su-47 Berkut by literally a few pixels. Not to mention the Berkut is inferior in most other aspects to the Raptor, as well. As a result, once it's unlocked, this should be your aircraft of choice, unless you don't wanna be cheap and want a challenge. It is unlocked exactly 3/4ths of the way through the game.

Airforce Delta Storm[]

Stats are somewhat similar to its original incarnation, though ever so slightly worse in some departments (Attack is fairly average, and Speed is slightly worse than in the original game). Defense is improved, however. It's unlocked in the second-half of the game, and will definitely be a plane of choice until the likes of the MiG-1.44 MFI are unlocked.

Airforce Delta Strike[]

An aircraft for Ken Thomas. Stats this time around are nerfed - Its only stat that is maximum is Thrust, and others are decently high. Oddly, the YF-23A is superior in it to many regards, with the exception of Defense. However, that plane is exclusive to Ruth Valentine, so that's not as important. This plane is a very above average plane, but it has problems. Namely, the internal-bomb bays makes it awkward for it to fire its weapons rapidly; you'll generally only fire two missiles at a time because of this. However, it does possess vulcans, which can help. Otherwise, if you really dislike the internal bomb-bays getting in the way of your attacking, you may want to consider something else for Ken, like the MFI or the S-55 LFS.

Trivia[]

  • This aircraft only appears as an enemy in the first game; in every other game in the series, it is strictly used by allied characters presumably due to licensing deals with Lockheed Martin (Though a fictional variant and the X-44 (named 'XF-0001 Mercury' in-game) do appear as enemies in Airforce Delta Storm).
    • In addition, the model seen in the first game is that of the YF-22, evident from the instrument probe on the nose.
  • In Strike, the aforementioned licensing deal prevented the F/A-22 to be operated in space missions as well.
  • F/A-22, F-16C Block 50 Fighting Falcon and F-117A Nighthawk are the only licensed aircraft in Airforce Delta Storm. All three of them are Lockheed Martin's products.
  • This is the only plane in the series to have two different enemy paint jobs appear in the same mission; in The True Island Fortress, there is a single mahogany black target F/A-22, and two deep blue optional F/A-22s. This never happens anywhere else in the series.
  • In Airforce Delta Strike, in cockpit view, a picture of Ellen McNichol can be seen in the bottom-left corner.
